Accra floods: Korle-Bu doctor feared dead

0

The body of a medical officer is still missing hours after a heavy downpour in Accra on Monday night.

An eyewitness told XYZ News the deceased is Adwoa Esson and a medical Doctor at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

One of the eyewitnesses who narrated the incident said the medical practitioner’s Hyundai Sonata got submerged when she attempted to drive through a flooded area on the ‘Naa Pra’ lagoon at Rasta, a suburb of Teshie in the Ledzokuku Krowor Municipality.

Reports say the flood current was too heavy that it toppled the car over the broken bridge into the lagoon where she was carried away.

‘I think she had closed from work at about 11pm. When she got here, the whole place was flooded. The bridge broke and the car started moving in to it. People gave her a metal bar to help her out but it was not working. I kept shouting but we couldn’t get any help,” one of the residents said, pointing to the abandoned dilapidated bridge that needs to be constructed.

Another added that she [Adwoa] had initially broken out of the floating car but was unable to make it out, unlike two other passengers who had earlier been pulled out by some residents who met the incident as it unfolded.

The mangled Hyundai Sonata

At about the 6am Tuesday when XYZ News’ Kenneth Awotwe Darko visited the scene, the mangled salon car filled with debris was discovered by the residents about 500 metres away from the main ‘Bush’ road after it was forced under an adjoining bridge towards the Kpeshie Lagoon.

Officials from the National Disaster Management Organization who arrived at the scene around 7:30am to assess the situation were seen interacting with the visibly distraught family who had rushed to the scene on hearing the news of the unfortunate incident.

Residents fear dilapidated bridges

An opinion leader in the area, popularly known as ‘Alhaji States’ lamented the poor nature of the bridges in the area which he said are a major factor contributing to similar disasters in the area.

“we need the bridge to be expanded and raised. We have complained so may times to the authorities. We even complained to Okoe [MP for Ledzorkuku Constituency Bernard Okoe Boye], he has also promised us that he will come. We’ve complained to Department of Urban Roads but they say they have given it to a contractor. The contractor also says she hasn’t been paid. So she cannot work”, he explained.

Accra recorded at least 40 millimetres of rains Monday night, lasting between 7:30PM and midnight resulting in terrible floods that have displaced many residents and destroyed properties in some parts of Accra.
The areas that got flooded include Dome,Taifa, Mallam, Adabraka, Odawna and some parts of Tema.

Reports from Cape Coast also indicate that heavy rains on Monday night flooded some areas in the Central regional Capital and its adjoining towns.

‘Corruption in Ghana is endemic’ – Sheikh Aremeyaw

0

Renowned Muslim cleric, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu has described the spate at which corruption is on the ascendancy in Ghana as endemic.

Speaking to Host of the Morning Xpress on Radio XYZ 93.1, Neil Armstrong-Mortagbe on Wednesday, the preacher observed that corruption in Ghana has reached a level where people see it as being normal.

Linking corruption to selfishness and greed on the part of citizens, Sheikh Shaibu bemoaned how the personal interests of many, including Government officials and Politicians has led to untold hardships being inflicted on many in the country.

“Our society is hurting; our society is bleeding. We are hurting ourselves and that’s where the corruption is leading us to,” he said, as he indicated that the canker is weakening the economy.

To him, the love for one’s country has been lost on many citizens and, therefore, engaging in bribery and corruption is not seen as a crime.
“…This is something that has become culturally acceptable but it’s something that is eating us,” he said.

“Ghana is called a religious country,” he said, making reference to the teachings people acquire from Churches and Mosques on values and morals; and yet, corruption keeps thriving in Ghana.

In his suggestion to curb the menace, Sheikh Shaibu said the country will require the collective efforts of teachers, parents and all citizens to help reduce corruption in the country.

“We need a national re-orientation…..we must agree that we have lost touch with our own values…….where we all become each others’ keeper as citizens. We also need certain institutional reforms that resonate with our spirits,” he proffered.

To this end, He urged Government to help with the institutional reforms to help drive the agenda to effectively tackle corruption.

Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu’s comments follows a public uproar that greeted the screening of an investigative piece by undercover journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas that captured over 70 Ghanaian referees and football administrators taking cash to fix games in the country.

The latest undercover piece dubbed #Number12 which was showed on Wednesday June 6 2018 captured former GFA president Kwesi Nyantakyi on camera collecting $65,000 from supposed investors to influence the president, Nana Akufo-Addo and his vice, Dr Bawumia to get them contracts.

The tongue-wagging undercover has resulted in the dissolution of the mother football body in the country, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) pending restructuring.

Pepperdem lady rips government apart over presidential staffer’s suspension

0

Ms Felicity Nelson, a member of feminist group Pepperdem Ministries, has, in her personal capacity, lampooned the Akufo-Addo government over the Presidency’s suspension of one of her Pepperdem colleagues, Dr Louise Carol Serwaa Donkor, who works as a Policy and Communication Analyst at the Jubilee House, for making what Chief of Staff Frema Osei-Opare describes as “unsavoury” comments about “a section of Ghanaians” on social media.

Ms Osei-Opare wrote an official letter to Mr Eugene Owusu, Special Advisor to the President on SDGs, to suspend Dr Donkor, for making some anti-foot soldier comments recently.

The Chief of Staff said Dr Donkor has misconducted herself hence the request for her suspension.

In the letter dated 12 June 2018, Ms Osei-Opare noted that her attention “has been drawn to some unsavoury comments attributed to Dr Louise Carol Serwaa Donkor, the Policy and Communication Analyst, at your outfit

“These comments sought to disparage a section of the Ghanaian society, a conduct which is unacceptable to this Office.

“Consequently, you are directed to suspend Dr Donkor from office for a period of thirty days beginning the 13th day of June 2018.

“Further, she is required to render, in writing, an unconditional apology and commit to good behaviour”.

On Sunday, 10 June, Mr Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), said it was “stupidity” for Dr Donkor to have denigrated foot soldiers who worked hard to ensure victory for the party.

According to him, such attitude smacks of gross political immaturity.

Dr Louise Carol Serwaa Donkor had said in response to a post by Ms Nelson about not dealing with foot soldiers that: “You shouldn’t”, and encouraged her friend who posted it that: “You can’t reason with them [foot soldiers]”.

“It’s like tribalist”, she added. She has since apologised for her comments.

Weighing in on the matter, Mr Otchere-Darko, wrote on Facebook that: “I hold no brief for a young woman who owes her appointment to an election victory won largely by those who in various ways did the legwork and/or heavy-lifting to make it happen and yet decided to diss them.

“She showed gross political immaturity (in fact, stupidity) by denigrating party foot soldiers the way she did – totally unprovoked by them. She has apologised. I suspect this week has been one of her worst, if not the worst, in her entire young life. I hope so! Hey guys! Move on! Surely, you can’t care much about a lady who chose to merely gargle from the fountain of political wisdom to hate her that much. She cannot be worth your precious emotions until she learns how to drink from that fountain. Move on! Show you have better things to focus on. If you do go to Church today and perchance ask for forgiveness, I hope you expect the Almighty to be merciful. How much more you! Show strength, people!”

Without speaking for Pepperdem as a group, an enraged and furious Ms Nelson, who serves as an in-house panelist on Class91.3FM’s Executive Breakfast Show, told sit-in host Benjamin Akakpo on Wednesday, 13 June, that: “Right now, I think that we are actually going into an era in which we are doing government by foot soldiers. … There was no mention of NPP or NDC, so, I’m quite surprised that NPP people have taken it so personally”.

She continued: “I think it [the backlash] was completely unwarranted. And actually, there was a lot of misogynistic focus in terms of the insults … where people were saying she slept her way into her position, there was a lot of comments about ‘she’s ugly’, you know a lot of social media bullying by people who are even presidential staffers themselves. She has a PhD and she actually got a scholarship to do this PhD and it wasn’t given by the government.

“Just a few weeks ago, we had Nii Teiko Tagoe, who is also a presidential staffer, say that the guy who went to protest [for the opening of the University of Ghana Medical Centre at a programme attended by First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo], ‘in another country, he could have been shot’, he is still at post. We had Napaga, in January, she said that they should stop giving her CVs when they meet her at official events, she is still at post, so, I think it’s very interesting now when Louise makes this comment, it wasn’t even directed at any [party] and this whole thing of ‘a section of Ghanaians’, what does that mean? Is government supposed to serve the public interest or is it supposed to serve a section of Ghanaian society?

“I think even they [Presidency] know that it is so petty and so ridiculous… Why didn’t they say that: ‘We want to appease our foot soldiers because we failed to give them jobs, we failed to give them the healthcare they deserve, we don’t give them ambulances if they go to the hospitals, no oxygen, we haven’t given you the factories we promised … so what we are going to do is that we are going to use this to distract them from the things that we have actually failed to provide’, so, that’s what this really is and I’m so appalled, I’m really appalled … I’m so ashamed to be Ghanaian today because I actually voted for this government, today I am ashamed”, Ms Nelson fumed.

Ghana Card Registration: Minority Runs To Court

0

The Minority in Parliament is heading to court to challenge the National Identification Authority’s basis for only accepting passports and birth certificates to establish citizenship for the registration and instant issuance of the Ghana Card.

It wants the Voters’ ID card to also be accepted as proof of citizenship.

The Minority Spokesperson on Constitutional and Legal Affairs, Inusah Fuseini, insisted to the media the NIA was wrongly interpreting the landmark 2016 judgment in the Abu Ramadan vs Electoral Commission case.

The Supreme Court ordered the Electoral Commission to expunge from the voters’ register the names of all persons who registered and voted in the 2012 elections with the National Health Insurance (NHIS) card as a proof of identity.

The judgment followed contentions that non-Ghanaians had been registered using the NHIS card.

Until the legal challenge is resolved, the Minority will be continuing its boycott of the process.

“We will challenge same and we have also decided that in view of the fact that more than 50 million Ghanaians have the Voters ID card as proof of citizenship and the fact that they are refusing to accept same for the basis of registration… We as a Minority will stay out of the registration process until a determination of whether or not the Voters ID card can be used as proof of citizenship as the purposes of getting onto the NIA platform,” Inusah Fuseini stated.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP was speaking after the Deputy Monitoring and Evaluation Minister, Dr. William Sabi, told Parliament the government will not compromise on its laid-down procedure.

Inusah Fuseini maintained that the NIA’s approach was violating the constitution.

“It is wrong in terms of Article 42 of the constitution, it is also wrong in terms of the decision of Abu Ramadan and it is also wrong in terms of LI [Legislative Instrument] 26… the Abu Ramadan case decided that NHIS cards are not proof of citizenship, and not the Voter ID card.”

“They have transposed the decision onto the use of a Voter ID card and we think that is wrong, it is illegal, it frowns in the face of the constitution and it is an illegal attempt to amend 42 of the constitution, which categorically says anybody who qualifies as a voter is entitled to be registered.”

The Minority in Parliament has also threatened to stage a demonstration to protest the NIA’s methods.

Former President John Mahama has already described the NIA’s approach as illogical.

According to him, the move will denationalize over 20 million Ghanaians.

But he assured that the NDC will do everything possible to have the identification scope expanded for the exercise.

Swearing of affidavits
In the government’s presentation to Parliament on Tuesday, it indicated that the only alternative in the absence of passports and birth certificates , will remain the swearing of affidavits.

Over 2, 700 personnel are being trained by the Judiciary to administer oaths and certify Ghanaians without the required identification.

Dr. William Sabi stressed the importance of keeping the registration process watertight.

“Every reasonable effort will be made to assist Ghanaians to establish their eligibility to register for the cards… [but] every reasonable effort must also be made to exclude foreigners from registering as Ghanaians.”

Ghana to shut down football association after graft claims

0

Ghana on Thursday said it would dissolve the country’s football association after explosive revelations of bribe-taking by referees and kickbacks to top officials that have shocked the football-mad nation.

Information minister Mustapha Abdul-Hamid said the government had “decided to take immediate steps to have the GFA (Ghana Football Association) dissolved” because of the “widespread nature of the apparent rot”.

The GFA had earlier pledged to tackle corruption in the wake of a long-awaited undercover documentary unveiled in Accra on Wednesday night, just over a week before the start of the World Cup finals.

Hidden camera footage purportedly showed referees taking as little as $100 (85 euros) each to rig matches.

It further alleged that GFA President Kwesi Nyantakyi — a senior member of world governing body FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) — requested $11 million from reporters posing as investors to secure government contracts.

He also allegedly tried to profit personally from a $5 million-a-year, five-year sponsorship deal with the GFA in what the expose said was a “clear breach” of ethics.

The information minister said the government, which has pledged to cut corruption in the country, was “shocked and outraged” at the claims.

The documentary “exposes gross malfunctioning of the Ghana Football Association characterised by widespread fraud, corruption and bribery”, he said in a statement.

The conduct of all GFA officials and the suspended director-general of the National Sports Authority, Robert Sarfo Mensah, was referred to police for further investigation and any “appropriate action”, he added.

Provisional measures will be put in place to run the sport in Ghana until a new body is formed. CAF and FIFA will be kept informed, he said.

“Government will see to it that the necessary reforms are urgently undertaken to sanitise football administration in the country,” the minister stated.

– ‘No cover-up’ –

The GFA said it had not seen the documentary, which has sparked concerns about media freedom in Ghana after the journalist responsible received death threats.

But it said in a statement: “We view the allegations circulating in the media very seriously and would wish to take immediate steps to address them.”

It added: “The GFA wishes to place on record that, there will be no attempt of a cover-up or shield any of our members caught in alleged acts of corruption.

“The GFA wishes to assure all that as an institution it does not condone any manner of corrupt practices.”

The governing body said it had previously acted swiftly against claims of match-fixing.

In 2014, Britain’s Channel 4 television and the Daily Telegraph newspaper claimed Nyantakyi agreed a $170,000-deal for Ghana’s national side to play in a friendly organised by match fixers.

Nyantakyi denied signing any contract.

– ‘Wake-up call’ –

Ghana’s senior men’s team, the Black Stars, have not qualified for the World Cup finals in Russia, which include two teams from West Africa; Nigeria and Senegal.

At the last tournament in Brazil in 2014, Ghana’s previous government chartered a plane to send more than $3 million in cash to players in a row over appearance fees.

That decision caused a scandal back home as the country struggled with spiralling inflation, a yawning budget deficit and depreciating currency.

Diplomats, lawmakers, government ministers and members of the public packed a conference centre in Accra to watch the first screening of the two-hour documentary on Wednesday.

Football fan Simon Gyamfi said afterwards it was a “wake-up call” for the national game, adding: “I hope it will lead to a total clean-up in Ghanaian football.

“There is so much corruption in the system… The entire Ghana FA executive must be scrapped. What we have just seen is a total disgrace to the beautiful game.”

The documentary is the work of secretive investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, who has previously exposed graft in the judiciary.

After watching an advance private screening, President Nana Akufo-Addo complained to police that Nyantakyi had “used the president’s name and office fraudulently”.

Nyantakyi was then questioned and released pending further investigation.

A lawmaker from Akufo-Addo’s ruling New Patriotic Party has since accused Anas of being corrupt and insinuated he should be killed and his colleagues beaten up.

How Samuel Sukah took GHc 2000 to rig Hearts vs Kotoko

0

An alleged  tape reveals that Ghana Premier League referee Samuel Sukah accepted money to alter the outcome of a Football match between Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak in favour of the Phobians

It has emerged that Ghana Premier League referee Samuel Sukah accepted a healthy sum of money to rig the matchweek 8 fixture played on March 19 2017, between Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak in favour of the Phobians.

Sukah awarded a controversial penalty in the 84th minute of the match to home side Hearts of Oak after Awudu Nafiu was adjudged to have handled the ball.

Vincent Atinga made no mistake as he stepped up to convert the spot kick which ensured they picked up all three points.

Despite massive outrage especially from Asante Kotoko after the game he was cleared by the Referee Review Committee of any wrongdoing in the Super Clash.

Sukah did employ the help of his supporting officials to influence the game.

As the main man, he took an amount of Ghc 2,000, while Assistant One Eric Nantiere and Assistant Two Salifu Rahman both pocketed an amount of GHc 1,500 each.

The victory ended Asante Kotoko’s unbeaten run at the time.

He and his cohorts were caught on tape as part of the investigative piece on corruption in football put together by Anas Aremeyaw Anas and his team.

Cudjoe Fianoo: “Disgraceful” Nyantakyi must resign as the GFA President

1

President of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) Cudjoe Fianoo has called for GFA President Kwesi Nyantakyi to resign with immediate effect after he was implicated in Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ latest expose on Ghana Football dubbed “Number 12.”

Nyantakyi was seen in the video outlining to agents of Anas’ TigerEyePI who posed as investors the key government officials to bribe and also the steps to take to get a strangle hold on key projects in the country, as well as suggesting a dummy financial agency that would broker a sponsorship deal for the Ghana Premier League.

Fianoo, who was speaking on Eyewitness News on Wednesday night described Nyantakyi’s actions in the video as a disgrace and called for his resignation.

“If I were him I would have resigned by now. What I saw was shocking and a big disgrace to Ghana Football.
